Job safety guide

Most job scams follow the same few patterns. These rules stop nearly all of them.

The short version

  • Never pay money to get a job.
  • Never share your BVN, NIN or bank login.
  • Meet in public, and tell someone where you are going.

1. Never pay money

No real employer charges you to apply, to be interviewed, for training, for a uniform, for equipment, or to “process” an offer. If you are asked to pay anything, it is a scam. Stop replying and report it.

2. Never share your BVN, NIN or bank login

An employer needs your bank account number to pay a salary — after you have started, through their payroll. They never need your BVN, your NIN, a one-time code from your bank, or your internet-banking password.

3. Meet in public, and tell someone

A first interview in person belongs at a real office or a public place, in daylight. Tell a friend or family member where you are going and when you expect to be back. Be wary of a location that changes at the last minute.

Other warning signs

  • The pay is far above what the role would normally pay, for little experience.
  • You are hired without an interview, or pressured to decide immediately.
  • The conversation moves quickly to WhatsApp or a personal phone number.
  • The company cannot be found anywhere outside the message.

On NITACON

  • Every conversation shows what NITACON has confirmed about the employer. “Company registration verified with the CAC” means we checked it; a caution notice means we have not.
  • Messages that look like they ask you for money are flagged in red.
  • Use “Report this conversation” in any thread. Our safety team reviews every report, and the employer is not told who reported them.
  • Your phone number and email are shared only if you choose to accept.
